Completely preserved, the walls of Kotor are a rare example of fortification architecture in Europe. The construction of the bulwarks started in the 9th century, but they were only finished centuries later. Most of the towers date from the 16th century.

The town can be entered through three city gates. The Sea Gate, on the western side of the town, is the main gate. The gate dates from the 16th century and was built in the Renaissance and Baroque style. The North Gate, also known as the River Gate, was built in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. This gate leads to the bridge over the Scurda River that closes the walls from the north. The South Gate, also called Gurdic Gate, is the least attractive of the three but, considering the remains, it was once an important entrance to the town since it had a drawbridge.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.5.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.5.1″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.marzito.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/marzito-kotor-montenegro-walls-night-1080.jpg” alt=”Muralhas de Kotor à noite, iluminadas pelas luzes” title_text=”Muralhas de Kotor” _builder_version=”4.5.1″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”3.25″][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.marzito.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/marzito-kotor-montenegro-details-320.jpg” alt=”Esculturas de pedra de santos” title_text=”Detalhe em Portão do Mar” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”4.5.1″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.marzito.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/marzito-kotor-montenegro-walls-320.jpg” alt=”Buracos na muralha usados para defesa” title_text=”Detalhe na muralha defensiva” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”4.5.1″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.marzito.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/marzito-kotor-montenegro-lion-320.jpg” alt=”Um relevo do leão segurando um livro” title_text=”O relevo do leão na muralha” align_tablet=”center” align_phone=”” align_last_edited=”on|desktop” _builder_version=”4.5.1″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”27px|0|27px|0px|false|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″]
Fortaleza de San Giovanni

Located high above the Kotor Old Town, the San Giovanni Fortress is also known as the Fortress of St. John.
